Join MHTA for a Trail Chat with some of your favorite trail associations. Learn about the recent improvements they have made at their adopted areas and what they have planned for 2026. We’ll learn about their events, trails and campgrounds and any riding destinations. They will also share how you can join and support these associations that ensure we have trails to enjoy! We’ll have a great night of conversation highlighting the volunteerism, trails, camps and events throughout the state. Joining us will be the Upper Peninsula Trail Horse Association, Michigan Trail Riders Association, Waterloo Horsemen Association, Backcountry Horsemen – Pigeon River and Sleeping Bear Equestrian Club. Michigan has seen an increase in natural disasters from wildfires, tornados, floods, ice storms and damaging winds. Our horses rely on us for knowing what steps to take to be disaster ready. There is no better person to provide this information than Rebecca Gimenez Husted, PhD. Rebecca has been instructing first responders, veterinarians and owners the world over to cover the most vulnerable aspect of horse care—knowing how to respond to accident and disasters. From researching steps to protect our animals from barn fires, horse trailer accidents, to developing procedures and methods to stand them up when they are down and trapped, this is a presentation your horses will want you to attend. We highly recommend all trail associations have a representative join us for this course. Over half of the respondents to the survey said they would like to ride in the UP but have not yet, so we have asked UPTHA to join us to chat and answer your UP questions and talk about all the fun planned in the UP this year. We will also show you how to get the most out of using the Michigan Horse Trails Directory including the trail event calendar. Do you have questions and would like to know more about how to use apps for directional riding help when out on the trails? Join us for an evening explaining how to use Avenza and Ramblr apps. Please have both downloaded to your phone and ready to use. Be where you have good internet and we’ll work to get you feeling ready to give using apps a try. Join us for an evening of Tribute Equine Nutrition Talk with Brandy Miller, a Consultant with Kalmbach Feeds. Brandy holds a Bachelors degree in Biology and Masters in Education. She is an active Michigan Horse Trails Association member and the Central Michigan Equine Trails Subcommittee Representative. Brandy has a diverse equestrian background spanning over 40 yrs including MQHA/AQHA ALL-Around events, Halter, Barrel Racing, Trail riding and is a United States Pony Club Alumni. We’re very excited to chat with her!

Our first course is Reading and Utilizing the Equine Senses taught by Vicki Schmidt who joined us in Michigan in 2024 to teach the Large Animal Emergency Rescue courses. Sensations of sight, audio, touch, and smell can impact our activities with horses as both assets and liabilities. In this virtual event, we will begin to explore the equine senses and how we can work with them to increase positive outcomes in emergencies and beyond.
